Located in the agricultural setting of Leamington, Ontario, Cardinal Carter Secondary School uses an elemental material pallet of rich tones and natural textures such as brick. The humanistic quality of brick allows the school to become part of its pastoral surroundings as it sprawls across the agricultural landscape. Brickwork transitions into the interior walls of the building, emphasizing the connection between the outside landscape and the inside environment. This relationship of interior and exterior space is reinforced in the entrance atrium of the school, where a two storey, south facing glazing wall opens up to the school’s rear courtyard. The courtyard features a large paved area for mass student gatherings, traffic and multi-purpose events and is the primary entry exit point for students.
This project boasts a capacity of 1,000 students within approximately 150,000 square feet of high-tech teaching facilities. The 12 acre site includes a 400 meter all weather track, football field, soccer pitch, tennis courts and associated paved roads and parking lots and a highly acclaimed greenhouse / biology program. One special feature is the greenhouse facility attached to the rear of the building which offers a integrated and hands-on agriculture program – uniquely emulating the character of the municipality’s most prominent industry.
The building includes over 24 regular teaching classrooms, science laboratories, computer rooms, a technical wing, a separate cafeteria and auditorium – complete with theater seats and fly space. A large gymnasium compliments the athletic program and is equipped with divider curtains and multiple games courts.
