This exciting and challenging project set out to realize the first major change to the academic facility since the existing building was constructed in 1967. The design of the extensive building expansion involved the construction of a two storey teaching and laboratory space complete with atrium and mezzanine within an existing high-bay space. The new work was enclosed on two walls with existing athletic and academic facilities and it was situated over existing exercise, fitness, swimming pool and change room facilities. The project’s level of difficulty was unlike any other new construction project currently on campus and was the result of expert thinking, phasing and planning by the project team.
JPT developed the new expansion by listening to and analyzing the University’s program requirements and budget goals. JPT was able to integrate these components with the information outlined in a Space Needs Study, a Growth Plan and a Strategic Plan. The result was a design scheme which completely changed the paradigm of both the physical teaching environment and the mode in which the faculty delivers education.
Some of the project highlights include: a new 225 seat lecture classroom complete with stepped seating, power and wireless data at seats and a fully integrated multi-media package; three similar small-scale lecture classrooms; two new seminar spaces; multiple rooms with video-conferencing; additional lab space for both teaching and research purposes complete with divisible rooms for flexibility, natural light and multiple force-plate pit locations; a new 60 seat computer lab; undergraduate and graduate student spaces; faculty offices; and an atrium.
